MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL offering free access to their online game archives

In the shadow of the suspensions of ongoing and upcoming seasons, due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, the four major North American sports leagues have chosen to provide live sports-deprived viewers access to their respective online game archives.

Major League Baseball (MLB) has made available archives for the entire 2018 and 2019 seasons.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has made available, until April 22nd, their full-game and condensed archives of the 2019-2020 season-to-date, as well as select classic game archives.

The National Hockey League (NHL) has also decided to make their full 2019-2020 season-to-date game archive available for no charge.

The National Football League (NFL) was the one league spared an immediately tough decision to defer an ongoing or upcoming season. Their on-field season concluded on February 2nd with Super Bowl 54. However, the NFL has chosen to join the gesture of goodwill by providing for free archival access to games from each of their last two seasons, through May 31st.

NFL: Redskins fire Gruden after 0-5 start

Early this morning, the NFL’s Washington Redskins made the decision to fire head coach Jay Gruden, following the team’s lackluster 0-5 beginning to the 2019 NFL season. According to the Washington Post, Gruden was fired during an early morning meeting at the Redskins’ Park training facility in Auburn, Virginia, that was attended by the team’s majority owner Daniel Snyder and President Bruce Allen.

Over the span of five-plus seasons, Gruden compiled a 35-49-1 record in 85 regular-season games, and an 0-1 record in the lone postseason appearance made by Washington during his tenure, a 35-18 defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Packers. Gruden was the eighth coach employed by Snyder since he assumed control of the franchise in 1999. And, he was the longest-tenured coach during Snyder’s reign of owning the team.

Assistant Head Coach Bill Callahan has been selected as the interim head coach for the remainder of this season. Callahan has previously been a head coach at the NFL-level in Oakland, and at the NCAA Division I-level at the University of Nebraska.

RG3 placed on Injured Reserve by NFL’s Browns

Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Robert Griffin III has been placed on injured reserve due to a fractured shoulder on his left (non-throwing) arm.

Griffin, who was 12-for-26 with one interception, along with five rushes for 37 yards, in the Browns’ 29-10 road loss at Philadelphia, will be reevaluated in three to four weeks.

The 26-year-old Griffin, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, while at Baylor University, signed a two-year, $15 million contract with Cleveland during the most recent off-season.
